August 10, 2008
Warm up is finished. Last sips of water have just being taken. The final check is done and everything is tight on the boat. The typical pre race butterflies are in the stomach right where they belong. Everything looks good and I feel ready to race my very first Olympic race. The thought running through my head at that very moment was, "in ten minutes I am officially going to be an Olympian".
And then over the loud speaker the starting official says, "Canada please row down the nearest lane, and proceed straight to the docks. There is an approaching thunderstorm." Great. Perhaps in a day and ten minutes I'll officially be an Olympian.
This is the second time at an international race this has happened to me. The first time was during the rep in Eton at the 2006 World Championships. With that race however, we were locked onto the start gates and they had started to pole the lanes when they decided to cancel due to ominous weather. I really didn't understand why we just didn't race down the course that time? We would have gotten in much faster! Oh well. Today was a bit different than then, since we weren't quite in the start gates yet.
The long day of waiting to race starts all over again tomorrow. It was, however, nice to go out there in the warm up zone for the first time and get in a good warm up and go through all of the race emotions. Good practice for when the real thing finally happens. Hopefully the thunderstorms stay away this time, but I'm sure the butterflies will come back.
